The ERS Lung Science Conference (LSC) is at the forefront of basic and translational respiratory science. SCIREQ looks forward to attending this event each year as it provides the unique opportunity to network with peers worldwide and featuring cutting-edge abstracts on novel experimental lung research.
The theme of this year’s virtual event was: “Repair and regeneration in chronic lung disease and lung cancer”. The organizers did a great job with this first virtual edition, with a diverse mix of talks and poster sessions. If you missed the opportunity to attend, here are some highlights.
Several awards are presented each year at LSC to recognize researchers who have submitted high-quality abstract data. Congratulations to Dr. Martina de Santis for the William MacNee Award of the Young investigator Session and her exciting work on “Host response towards decellularized lung extracellular matrix reinforced bioinks for 3D bioprinting lung tissue for transplantation”.
Among distinguished posters, we also want to congratulate Dr. Ian Hawthorne for his work “Mesenchymal stromal cells reduce house dust mite induced allergic airway inflammation in a humanized MIF expressing mouse model”.
Other groups used the flexiVent to acquire lung function mechanics data, such as Dr. Clare Lloyd’s from the Imperial College London in ’Epidermal growth factor receptor in airway remodelling during allergic airway disease – divergent roles during early life and adulthood?”.
Lung regeneration was the hot topic during the talks. For instance, Dr. Kilian Hurley presented “Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) derived lung stem cells as tools to understand lung regeneration and disease”. He demonstrated a clear pathway for generating type 2 alveolar epithelial cells (ACE2) from iPSC to model SARS-CoV-2 Infection, as ACE2 is particularly difficult to access from patients. Additionally, Dr. Joo-Hyeon Lee studied “The journey of stem cell differentiation during alveolar regeneration”, with examples of both Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and adenocarcinoma.
Dr. Pieter Hiemstra focused on another devastating disease with her talk “Mesenchymal stem cell therapy for severe emphysema” and demonstrated increased lung function (Forced Expired Volume; FEV1) and bodyweight post mesenchymal stem cell therapy. It was also the case of Dr. Georgios Stathopoulos in his session “Club cells in adenocarcinoma and alveolar repair”, where using the flexiVent, this group was able to show impaired lung function in airway cell-ablated mice (CCSP.CRE and LYZ2.CRE).
The 2021 edition lived up to the standards of previous years, and we are looking forward to the next ERS Lung Science Conference, hopefully in person next time!
