Automated Gas Challenges Using the vivoFlow

SCIREQ’s plethysmography system – the vivoFlow – permits a continuous, non-invasive, assessment of breathing patterns in conscious subjects and allows for automated exposure to gas challenges, as well as aerosol delivery, wired and vascular access.

  • Record Resting Breathing Patterns: The vivoFlow can be used for screening subjects quickly for preliminary respiratory data such as recording resting breathing patterns and to assessing chemoreflex function.

  • Automated Exposure to Gas Challenges: IOX software can precisely control the delivery of user defined gas mixes with automated protocols. Gas challenges can lead to changes in ventilatory behaviour, as well as events such as apneas, which are recorded and quantified in real-time by IOX. Normoxia, hypoxic, and hypercapnic stimuli can be applied to challenge the subject’s respiratory system and study its response to varying levels of O2 and CO2.

  • Biopotential Monitoring Using Implantable Telemetry: Plethysmography can be extended with high-fidelity EEG/EMG signals, optogenetics triggering and blood oxygen sensors, which yield further insights into a subjects ventilatory control during gas challenges.
