Over the last several years, we have refined the inExpose system to allow researchers to easily expose small groups of subjects to toxins and generate accurate animal models of lung diseases. The inExpose solution is cost effective, reproducible and proven.

Cost effective

The inExpose will fit under a standard fume hood on any lab bench top. With its compact size and low cost, this solution enables new researchers and small laboratories to pursue their toxicology studies. Furthermore, with the system’s low internal volume, unintentional dilution of precious compounds is reduced. This also permits high concentrations to be reached quickly, ultimately saving time and money. Along with unintentional dilution, the inExpose can also capture aerosol rain-out to allow users re-use their costly compounds and offer minimal waste.

Reproducible

The inExpose is fully automated where computer and software control permit the researcher to accurately define and repeat their protocol. Pump profiles can be time-varying and allow for reproducible exposure profiles. With unparalleled precision and accurate delivery of the toxin or compound, the inExpose allows researchers to have a standardized animal model. With its size and reproducibility, fewer subjects may be needed per study group.

Accurate

The flexiVent is a sensitive device that offers precise control of experimental conditions, allowing researchers to determine functional phenotypes (see Phenotyping Cystic Fibrosis with the flexiVent), detect differences in disease severity (see COX-2-derived prostacyclin protects against bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis) and much more.

Furthermore, distinction between a subject’s airway versus tissue mechanics can be discerned in a matter of seconds, a detailed measurement unique to the flexiVent (see Assessing Airway Hyperresponsiveness using flexiVent). The flexiVent is comprehensive and easily permits a variety of measurements using a single protocol, providing the most information within one platform.

Detailed insights are obtained rapidly, resulting in fewer false positives, critical for drug development studies (see The flexiVent in the Asthma Drug Development Process) and allowing for higher throughput without sacrificing measurement quality.

Reproducible

Automated protocols are executed with a mouse click and offer precise control whereby each measurement is taken at the same timepoint, in the same manner, for each subject. This allows accurate comparison between groups in real-time without further analysis, as evidenced during administration of inhaled aerosol delivery or when using a micro-CT scanner gated with ventilation (read Gated Thoracic Imaging with the flexiVent).

The flexiVent eliminates environmental conditions which may impact the measurements. Aspects of the protocol are seamlessly standardized including tidal volume, breathing rate, lung history and other ventilation parameters, ensuring the only true variable is the subject. For instance, our protocols automatically include controlled deep inflations to reset the subject’s lung history, bringing them back to baseline conditions.

With unparalleled accuracy and reproducibility, studies require fewer subjects. The typical flexiVent study group size is less than five subjects, resulting in less time and cost.
